New Opportunities to Activate our Cities with Social Technologies

How do you take some old, abandoned buildings and breath new life into it?  The answer, Temporary Urbanism.

A major theme during DC Week 2011 with be temporary urbanism, which focuses on exploring new opportunities to activate underused retail shops, city blocks, or empty storefronts in our cities with social technologies.   During DC Week, attendees will be able to experience interactive installations of technology projects, view live data social visualizations, and attend panels focused on temporary urbanism, social technology, and their relationship with the city.

Highlights include the projects Pop-Up Extravaganza, Street Games Fest, and the 24 Hour City Project and the panel  Temporary Urbanism Explored.  The Pop-Up Extravaganza will explore creating vibrant incubators for artists, musicians, retailers, and entrepreneurs.  Street Games Fest will allow game players to experience gameplay beyond the screen and around the city.  The 24 Hour City Project includes community service, live “data improv” dating, revisiting a childhood game, and participating in a parade.

During Temporary Urbanism Explored on Saturday November 5, 2011 1:00pm – 2:30pm, we’ll learn how a city can activate empty lots, abandoned storefronts, and cultural institutions.  We’ll explore how to encourage commerce, memorialization and design in fleeting but powerful ways.  If you love this city, you’ll love this panel. Please know that prepaid registration is required.

Stay tuned to the DC Week official site (www.digitialcapitalweek.org) for all of the info on Temporary Urbanism!
