The Re-Cycle
Public Project active 7 months, 2 weeks ago To join this project, Log In or Sign Up!WHAT:
The Re-Cycle will bring together members of the DC DIY tech, arts, and sustainability community for an epic bike ride and interactive art installation.
Part-promenade, part-critical mass, and part-art party, Bikes will start at Bicycle Space around 7PM and end (or, at least, pit stop) at the DC Week closing party by the time the show starts, around 8PM.
Along the way we’ll be tracing our route with DIY mapping technology constructed out of recycled materials (and pioneered by the good folks of Public Laboratory). After the ride, we’ll geocode the images to make a dynamic map of the route accessible online.
The ride itself will also showcase the power of recycled goods: We will construct at least one bicycle float out of recycled materials to serve as our mobile art piece and as a bandstand for a “junk band” — one that plays instruments made of entirely recycled material. The float will be constructed prior to the ride at Bicycle Space.
Upon arriving at the party after the ride, the float will be positioned either inside or outside the event (or both) and party-goers and passersby will be invited to add to the float, transforming it and its destination into an interactive art space. The band will also stick around to jam and activate the space outside while we have the float there.
The idea is to make DC’s sustainability community not only visible within the city but also a presence at the DC Week’s final party. Grant support will be used in float construction and material assembly.

WANNA GET INVOLVED?
Come out to play! We need riders — people with bikes or bike friends or bikeshare memberships — to join us on the 11th. We need creators — techie maker-types, crazy-sculptor types, unlimited other types — to help us construct the base float AND help us rock it out at the closing party. We want musicians, we want eco-nerds, we want slow fooders, self-sewers, home gardeners, occasional crafters. Anyone. Everyone.
In short, we want you!
WE NEED:
Creative scrap, building materials, guitar strings and instrument parts. Glue and nails and decorative paper. Anything you wanna get creative with.
Look out for an update for a scrap drive coming soon.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS:
We’re a ragtag bunch of eco/creative/techie nerds who came together through a stellar brainstorming session.
Our (awesome!) partners include Scrap DC, Bicycle Space, Scoutmob, and…you.
